The Power Of Silence! With 4 Scientific Proofs!!

Sharing is caring!

Sssshhh! This post is all about Silence.

This planet is gradually turning noisier that we became uncomfortable with SILENCE. Have you ever felt the urge to break the silence in a room? When you’re all alone and suddenly realized it’s too calm, What would you prefer? Do you enjoy the silence or rather switch on the TV or your favorite podcast? Most of us go with the latter, right?

We’re fine with spending 10 mins of the day in silence. But it’s not easy for us to have a prolonged hush. What if I say, Silence is more relaxing than music? Silence can relieve you from Insomnia? Silence can develop new brain cells? I know it’s hard to believe and that’s why I’m here with as many Scientific proofs as possible.

Silence!!!
The power of silence!

It is more relaxing than Music:

Wanna Sit back and Relax? Get your headphones on and tune into some soothing music. That’s what we usually hear from people.

But do you know Sitting in Silence can be more relaxing than listening to Music?

Yes. Physician Luciano Bernardi did a study in 2006 about the ‘Physiological Effects Of Music‘. He observed the changes in Blood Pressure, Carbon Dioxide, and circulation in the brain for different types of musical tracks.

To his surprise, two-minute silent pauses proved far more relaxing than ‘relaxing’ music and the long silence.

That’s why it’s important to take 2-minute breaks in between every hour to relax. If you’ve never tried it, You have no idea how impactful it would be. Even on those busy days, the exhaustive schedules can be handled with utmost ease by this practice.

It can relieve you from Insomnia:

You don’t need lovely lullabies or music at specific frequencies anymore. Just Silence and being mindful can improve the quality of your sleep.

In 2015, a study was conducted by Jama Internal Medicine on older adults who experienced Insomnia. After 6-weeks of Silent Mindfulness Meditation, they found their quality of sleep is improved and less daytime impairment.

So, next time when you have sleepless nights for no specific reason, try spending time on Silent Mindfulness

It can develop new Brain Cells:

Do you think you have to invest a lot to develop your brain? Absolutely not! Pay attention here. 2 hours of Silence per day can develop new brain cells. Unbelievable!

Again, A study was conducted by Imke Kirste in 2013. She examined the effects of different types of sounds in the brain of adult mice. She chose music, baby mouse calls, white noise, and silence. Though every sound has a certain neurological effect, nothing lasts long.

Only the Silence, yes 2 hours of silence per day prompted the development of new brain cells in the hippocampus (A brain region related to memory, involving senses)

It helps to Know Yourself Better:

Why do we date? To know the other person better? Silence is undoubtedly the exact same thing.

Silence is You dating with yourself. Trust me, that’s the first and most important person you have to date with. Your mind and soul have a lot to communicate with you and you have been so busy listening to others.

Understand yourself more than anyone in this world. Because no one else can do it for you. No one else can understand you the way you do. Not everything that you think and feel can be conveyed. Silence is the best way to caress your mind and soul.

I don’t think an experiment is necessary to prove this. Experience this and share your results with me.

It Improves Your Productivity:

Silence increases the focus and thus improve the quality of the work. Working in groups can be fun but that comes with a cost. It adds distraction. When you need to work with others or spend time in communicators, those are the time you’re not spending on yourself.

Ollie Campbell, CEO at Milanote explains the benefits of Quiet Time” that they introduced years ago at their organization. They divided each day into half and the first half is considered as Quiet Time. Complete Silence which means, no talking, no phone, no meetings, no emails, and not even Slack.

Because of this Quiet time, they could achieve 23% more productivity. It’s that huge. And the fun part is, they don’t work on Friday afternoons. Doesn’t that seem interesting?

It Improves Memory and Concentration:

Noise plays a major role in depleting cognitive functions like memory, problem solving, reading and language skills. And there comes the Silence to improve them.

It has become almost impossible to unplug ourselves from the noisy world now. And as a result, we’re facing difficulties with our aptitude. But the good news is, it’s observed that when you’re in silence, your brain can recover some of the cognitive abilities. In silence, the brain can restore some of those data which were lost due to noise.

It Increases Self-Love and Self-Compassion:

And Of course, when you spend quality time with yourself, you’re going to get many many reasons to love and accept your own self. Silence is the best way to engage with yourself.

In Silence, you have nothing but you. That nothingness and the void will push you to have conversation with yourself. You can’t help but introspect and get to know the smaller details.

And, if you’re someone struggling with no motive for self-love and compassion, Silence is going to provide you with all the logic you need and help you reinvent your self-worth.

Meditation!!
Meditation!!

Wrapping Up:

At Zen Monasteries, they have this interesting element called “A week-long Silent Retreat“. Every month out of four, one week will be spent in complete Silence. They do all the usual activities like Meditate, eat, work, garden but without uttering a word. All communications will be thru hand gestures.

Why do they do this? Maybe they know the Science behind the Silence.

So, remember this. Whenever you feel overwhelmed, stressed, or exhausted, all you need is 2 minutes of Silence. And you’re all set! As simple as that.

With that, I will see you in my next post with some more attractive and informative thoughts. In the meantime, practice Silence and let me know your experience.

Lotsa gratitude,

Sri..
